Karolis Arbaciauskas - Year 1, VFX
The process behind this piece was very experimental, from start to finish. I wanted to create a render that would capture an environment that was foreign yet familiar, futuristic yet primeval and dark yet light. Light plays an important role in the entire scene, creating a sense of calm in the dynamic landscape. In terms of experimentation, this was an attempt at coordinating 3D rendering techniques along with 2D mattes in order to add elements that would suggest deep space and a 3D humanoid figure to suggest scale.
While the theme is ‘dark’, this piece manipulates light to reveal only the most important elements beneath the darkness. I wanted to create a piece which takes on a more ominous perspective to infinite space and future travel. While one can interpret this render as us looking out into the depths in search of life and potential extra-terrestrial colonisation, it can also be seen as a discovery of 'us'. What if we were aware that we're being observed? Would we attempt to reach out? That is the question I wanted to narrate through this render.
All 3D modelling and rendering was produced using Cinema 4D and Octane Render.
