creative cut: the waves of aragoto
A piece based around movement and fluidity, taking inspiration from classical Japanese culture. I was particularly inspired by the ancient art of Kabuki (a type of Japanese theatre), with the exaggerated form of its costumes and the dramatic movements of its characters. My starting point was the development of basic style line pattern cutting exercises. I then started to incorporate Pattern Magic techniques to build a more 3D form. This led to further experimenting and the development of my own ‘wave’ techniques, which became fundamental to my silhouette and my narrative of movement. My development process was very organic with lots of draping my samples on the stand to create new and exciting silhouettes.
