Cat Cousland

Cat’s collection of moving images explore what it means to be a female. In which, the male gaze is projected onto using objects that at one point were associated with a woman aware of herself being surveyed by men (although not so much today.) It uses Dita Von Teese’s ‘How to be Unforgettable’ interview as a reference on what makes a girl ‘the girl he never forgets’.

In John Berger’s ‘Ways of Seeing’ (1972), it is stated that ‘men watch women, women watch themselves being looked at. A woman must continually watch herself. She is almost continuously accompanied by her own image of herself…she turns herself into an object, most particularly an object of vision, a sight’.
